Aftter opening marginally higher at 11,565, the Sensex exhibited high volatility in the morning trades. A fresh round of selling in late morning deals saw the index tumble to a low of 11,444. Metal stocks bore brunt of the selling.

However, renewed buying interest mainly in banking and technology stocks saw the index recoup losses and rebound into the positive. The buying gained momentum towards the close and the index rallied to a high of 11,672 - up 228 points from the day's low.

The Sensex finally ended with a smart gain of 110 points at 11,661.
