Sensex ends down 118pts; Tata Motors slumps 9%

The Sensex opened 61 points lower at 9626 on a weak global cues.

The index moved in a narrow range of 151 points - low of 9,502, and a high of 9,653.

Realty, auto and TECk stocks were the major losers today.

The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 118 points at 9,569.

The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,509 stocks traded, 1,505 declined, 911 advanced and the 93 were unchanged today.

The NSE Nifty settled with a loss of 52 points at 2,917.

INDEX SHAKERS...

Tata Motors plunged 8.7% to Rs 160. TCS slumped 4.8% to Rs 478. Wipro declined 4.3% to Rs 232.

 

ACC, Mahindra & Mahindra and Reliance Communication slipped over 4% each at Rs 465, Rs 278 and Rs 207, respectively.

Satyam Computer dropped 3.9% to Rs 135. Bharti Airtel and ITC lost around 3.1% each to Rs 689 and Rs 172, respectively.

Sterlite and ONGC were down 2.7% each to Rs 257 and Rs 670, respectively.

DLF and Grasim slipped 2.6% to Rs 294 and Rs 1,185, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates was down 2.3% to Rs 77, while Maruti Suzuki dropped 2.1% to Rs 502.

Reliance Infrastructure shed nearly 2% to Rs 577, and Tata Steel declined 1.8% to Rs 217.

Hindalco, Reliance, Larsen & Toubro and HDFC were the other major losers today.

...AND THE MOVERS

ICICI Bank gained 3.3% to Rs 441 and State Bank of India moved up 1.8% to Rs 1,286.

Ranbaxy advanced 1.2% to Rs 216. HDFC Bank and Hindustan Unilever were up marginally.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Satyam Computer topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 511 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 148 crore), Reliance (Rs 143 crore), DLF (Rs 142 crore) and Educomp Solutions (Rs 139 crore).

Satyam Computer, too, led the volume chart with trades of around 4.04 crore shares followed by Unitech (3.28 crore), Suzlon (1.44 crore), Cals Refineries (1.35 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources (1.11 crore).
