Sensex ends down 139pts; M&M, Tata Steel slump

The Sensex opened a tad (10 points) lower at 8,804. The index moved into green and touched a high of 8,859 in early trades. The index, thereafter, slipped back into red and drifted to a low of 8,632 - down 227 points from the day's high - as the day progressed.

The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 139 points at 8,674. In the process, the index ended the week with a significant loss of 650 points.

The Bankex dropped over 4% to 4,485, and the Metal index shed 3.3% at 4.427.

The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,503 stocks traded, 1,609 declined, 795 advanced, and 99 were unchanged today.

 

INDEX SHAKERS...

Mahindra & Mahindra slumped 8% to Rs 265. Tata Steel and Jaiprakash Associates plunged 7% each to Rs 166 and Rs 62, respectively.

Reliance Communications and SBI shed around 4.5% each at Rs 160 and Rs 1,042.

ACC tumbled 4% to Rs 470, and ICICI Bank dropped 3.7% to Rs 364.

Larsen & Toubro, BHEL and Grasim slipped around 3.5% each to Rs 641, Rs 1,320 and Rs 1,137, respectively.

Hindustan Unilever and Sun Pharma declined around 2.5% each to Rs 247 and Rs 1,076, respectively.

HDFC Bank, TCS and Infosys were down over 2% each to Rs 872, Rs 486 and Rs 1,204, respectively.

...AND THE MOVERS

Tata Motors and Reliance gained 1.8% each at Rs 135 and Rs 1,153, respectively.

Ranbaxy and NTPC were the only other gainers among the index stocks.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Satyam topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 396.60 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 321.35 crore), SBI (Rs 179.65 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 125.90 crore) and Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 119.46 crore).

Satyam led the volume chart with trades of around 11.15 crore shares followed by Unitech (1.61 crore), Cals Refineries (94.80 lakh), Jaiprakash Associates (94.55 lakh) and Reliance Natural Resources (66.55 lakh).
