Sensex has ended (provisional) at 16,943 - down 322 points.
The Nifty ended (provisonal) at 5,079 - down 99 points.

The Sensex is down 210 points at the day's low of 17,056. The Nifty is down 93 points at 5,085.
Metal index has slumped further - shedding over 3% to 15,948. The BSE bankex and realty index has dropped 1.7% each.

The indices seeem to have been besieged by a bout of nervousness in the past hour. The indices were hovering around the previous day's levels till noon, but a weak opening across the European markets and the impending weekend seem to have caused some edginess back home. The Sensex is now quoting at 17149, higher by 117 points and the Nifty is at 5138, down 41 points. The midcap and smallcap indices have also lost around 0.5% each at 6981 and 8888 respectively.
Bharti Airtel has rallied 2.4% to Rs 264. ITC has advanced 2% to Rs 271 and Grasim has added 0.8% at Rs 2653.
On the other hand, Tata Steel has lost 3% at Rs 557, Sterlite has declined 2.4% to Rs 711 and Jaiprakash Associates has shed 2.1% at Rs 130. And index heavyweight RIL has weakened by 1.7% at Rs 1052.
The market breadth has turned weak. Out of 2866 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 1025 advancing stocks as against 1744 declines.
