The Sensex opened with a huge negative gap of 373 points at 8,401. Relentless selling in select index heavyweights weighed on the market throughout the day.
However, late buying in the market helped the index recover smartly from the day's low of 8,316, and touch a high of 8,540. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 323 (3.7%) points at 8,451.
The BSE Realty index slumped 8.3% (152 points) to 1,679. The Capital Goods index shed 4.6% (92 points) at 5,252.
The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,561 stocks traded, 1,897 declined, 596 advanced and 68 were unchanged tdoay.

DLF and Reliance Communications (RCom) slumped 8.5% each to Rs 205 and Rs 182, respectively.
Sterlite and ICICI Bank plunged 8% each to Rs 201 and Rs 320, respectively.
HDFC Bank tumbled 7.3% to Rs 822. Reliance Infrastructure and Jaiprakash Associates shed 6.7% each at Rs 425 and Rs 60, respectively.
Reliance, Maruti, Tata Motors and Tata Power slipped around 6.5% each to Rs 1,059, Rs 483, Rs 126 and Rs 634, respectively.
HDFC dropped 5.5% to Rs 1,290. Infosys and Grasim declined nearly 4% each to Rs 1,127 and Rs 897, respectively.
Bharti Airtel, BHEL and Larsen & Toubro were down around 3% each at Rs 592, Rs 1,194 and Rs 712, respectively.

ACC and NTPC gained 1.5% each at Rs 408 and Rs 138, respectively.
SBI was up over 1% at Rs 1,093.
MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS
Relinace topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 293.80 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 155 crore), SBI (Rs 129.50 crore), Educomp Solutions (Rs 128.70 crore) and ICICI Bank (Rs 125 crore).
GVK Power led the volume chart with trades of around 1.78 crore followed by Suzlon (89 lakh), Reliance Petroleum (86.80 lakh), Reliance Natural Resources (72.30 lakh) and HDIL (70.30 lakh).
