Sensex ends down 37pts

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 418 points at 16,541 on positive cues from the global markets. The index moved up to a high of 16,683 in early deals.

Profit-taking at higher levels saw the index drop to lower levels as the day progressed, and drifted into negative zone towards the closing bell. The index dropped to a low of 16,064 - an intra-day swing of 619 points.

The Sensex finally closed (provisional) with a loss of 37 points at 16,086.

The Nifty closed (provisional) with a loss of five points at 4,861.
