The Sensex opened 90 points higher at 9,807 points on positive cues from the US markets. However, the index could not hold the gains and slipped into negative zone.
The index moved in a range of 237 points between 9,588 (low) and 9,826 (high) before finally settling with a loss of 69 points at 9,647.
The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,542 stocks traded, 1,499 advanced, 935 declined and 108 were unchanged today.
The NSE Nifty ended with a loss of 20 points at 2,959.
INDEX SHAKERS...
HDFC plunged 2.7% to Rs 1,487, while ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank slipped 2% each to Rs 448 and Rs 998, respectively.
Sterlite declined 1.6% to Rs 261. Reliance was down 1.5% at Rs 1,230.

Grasim slipped 1.3% to Rs 1,218, and DLF dropped 1.2% to Rs 282.
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Infrastructure, Jaiprakash Associates and TCS were down around 1% each to Rs 715, Rs 580, Rs 83 and Rs 478, respectively.
BHEL and Wipro lost 0.8% each to Rs 1,362 and Rs 233, respectively.
Hindustan Unilever, Infosys and ONGC were the other major losers today.
...AND THE MOVERS
Satyam surged nearly 6% to Rs 170. Ranbaxy soared 4.4% to Rs 252.
Tata Motors and Hindalco were up 1.9% each to Rs 159 and Rs 52, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra moved up 1.6% to Rs 275. Tata Power advanced 1.2% to Rs 748.
Tata Steel was nearly 1% to Rs 217.
VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
Satyam topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 465.81 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 254.80 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 162.45 crore), DLF (Rs 149.44 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 136.97 crore).
Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.79 crore shares followed by Satyam (2.72 crore), Unitech (2.36 crore), GVK Power (2.25 crore) and Suzlon (1.72 crore).
