Sensex ends on a flat note

The Sensex has closed (provisional) at 17,622 - down 15 points. Nifty ended down four points at 5,354.

Markets have opened flat during the special trading session on Saturday. The Nifty is up four points at 5,364. Sensex is also up 22 points at 17,659.

On Friday, the Dow snapped the three week winning streak, as investors continued to worry over the situation in Europe. The Dow ended flat at 12,977 while Nasdaq slipped 13 points at 2,976.

Back in India on Friday, key share indices ended marginally higher, amid a volatile trading session, led by bank shares. The Sensex ended at 17,637 up 53 points. Nifty ended up 20 points at 5,359. Foreign institutional investors bought shares worth a net Rs 578.65 crore on Friday.

 

BSE bankex has gained 0.5% in opening trades and is at 12,060. IT and PSU shares are also in green. Meanwhile, the realty index is weak at 1,843.

Coal India is the top Sensex gainer - up 0.5% at Rs 333. Hero MotoCorp, Jindal Steel, ICICI Bank and SBI are up around half a per cent each. IT shares Infosys and Wipro are trading in the green.

Meanwhile, Cipla has slipped 1% to Rs 312 after receiving Rs 424 crore demand notes from NPPA. Sterlite and DLF have shed half a per cent each to Rs 124 and Rs 203, respectively.

Among other stocks, EIH has soared 10.5% at Rs 99.20 after Reliance raised stake in the company to 18.5%. Gitanjali Gems has added nearly 1% at Rs 386 after sucessfully acquiring a company in Japan.
