Sensex ends up 14pts, Infosys, ITC zoom 3%

Mirroring the smart recovery in the global markets, the Sensex opened wtih a positive gap of 126 points at 12,656. All round buying in morning trades saw the index rally to a high of 12,790 - up 260 points from the previous close.

Intense selling pressure at higher levels saw the index pare gains and drift into negative zone towards the end of the day. The index slipped to a low of 12,511 - down 279 points from the day's high. The Sensex rebounded towards the close and finally settled with a marginal gain (14 points) at 12,544.

The FMCG and IT indices advanced around 1.8% each to 1642 and 4927, respectively. The Metal index gained 1.3% at 8123. The Bankex, however, slipped over 1% to 6191.

The market breadth was positive - out of 2,637 stocks traded, 1,474 advanced, 1,090 declined and 73 were unchanged today.

MOVERS & SHAKERS

Dr.Reddy's surged 4.4% to Rs 675. ITC and Infosys rallied 3% each to Rs 147 and Rs 2,078, respectively.

Hindalco and TCS advanced around 2% each to Rs 131 and Rs 1,236, respectively. NTPC was up over 1% at Rs 141.

SBI, HDFC and Tata Motors dropped over 2.5% each to Rs 922, Rs 1,514 and Rs 726, respectively.

ACC and Reliance Communications slipped 2% each to Rs 732 and Rs 391, respectively.

HDFC Bank, Bajaj Auto and Cipla shed around 1.5% each to Rs 918, Rs 2,491 and Rs 227, respectively.

BHEL and ICICI Bank were down 1% each at Rs 2,007 and Rs 822, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

MindTree topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 570.50 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 148.15 crore), Idea (Rs 136.80 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 123 crore) and Tech Mahindra (Rs 96.65 crore).

Idea led the volume chart with trades of around 1.48 crore shares followed by IFCI (83.55 lakh), MindTree (58.67 lakh), Evnix (53.80 lakh) and Broadcast Initiatives (32.95 lakh).
