The Sensex opened 73 points higher at 9,720 on the first trading day of the New Year.
The index moved in a range of 210 points between 9,712 (low) and 9,922 (high) before finally settling (provisional) with a gain of 265 points at 9,911.
The market breadth was positive - out of 2,559 stocks traded, 1,992 advanced, 504 declined and 63 were unchanged today.
The NSE Nifty ended (provisional) with a gain of 74 points at 3,033.
