Sensex ends up 544pts

The Sensex ends up (provisional) at 17,236 - up 544.

The Nifty ended (provisional) at 5,147 - up 161 points.

Metal stocks have helped the markets to extend gains. The Sensex is now up 496 points at 17,188, after touching a high of 17,193.

The Nifty is up 150 points at 5,136.

The BSE metal index has jumped 4% to 17,063. Oil & gas, power, IT and capital goods are the other top gainers among the sectoral indices.

Metal stocks have gained. Hindalco has soared 8.5% to Rs 154. Sterlite has jumped 4.5% to Rs 843. Tata Steel has gained 3% at Rs 597.

 

PSU heavy-weight, NTPC, has rallied 6.4% to Rs 229. Reliance has moved up 4% to Rs 1,062.

ICICI Bank, Infosys, Jaiprakash Associates, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Motors and HDFC have advanced over 2% each. Other gainers include BHEL, ITC, Sun Pharma and Grasim.

The BSE market breadth is positive. Out of 2,884 stocks traded, 65% have advanced while 32% have declined.
