Sensex ends up 59 pts

Sensex ended (provisional) at 17,643 -  up 59 points. Nifty ended up 19 points at 5,358.

Markets have turned volatile after recovering from the day's low in afternoon trades. The Sensex is up 15 points at 17,599. Nifty is trading up eight points at 5348.

In Asia, the Nikkei hit fresh seven month closing high following a ECB liquidity operation. The index ended up 0.7% at 9,777.

BSE realty index has slipped 2.4% to 1,845. IT and FMCG shares have also seen some selling pressure and are down nearly 1% each. Meanwhile, BSE bankex has managed to gain 1.5% at 12,010.

 

ITC is the top dragger among Sensex stocks and accounts for 17 points drop in the Sensex. DLF has tumbled 5.4% to Rs 203. ONGC has shed 2.2% at Rs 281 after LIC backed out of the bidding process which started on Thursday. BHEL, Hindalco, Coal India and Bajaj Auto have slipped 1-2% each.

On the other hand, Sun Pharma has added 2.5% at Rs 563. ICICI Bank,Larsen & Toubro and Jindal Steel have added 1-2% each. Among other gainers are SBI, Bharti Airtel and NTPC.

BSE market breadth was marginally positive. Out of 2,934 shares traded, 1,435 shares advanced while 1,362 shares declined.
