Sensex ends up 72pts; Reliance slips 3%

However, the index pared gains towards the end owing to weakness in Reliance. The index touched a low of 13,476, and finally settled with a gain of 72 points at 13,526.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,705 stocks traded, 1,847 advanced and 793 declined today.

The NSE Nifty moved up 14 points to end at 4,030.

INDEX MOVERS...

Jaiprakash Associates and Mahindra & Mahindra surged 4.5% each to Rs 160 and Rs 496, respectively.

Maruti and Satyam gained 4.3% each at Rs 574 and Rs 482, respectively.

ITC, SBI, Hindustan Unilever and ACC rallied around 4% each to Rs 178, Rs 1,172, Rs 209 and Rs 496, respectively.

 

Hindalco advanced 3% to Rs 142. DLF added 2.8% to Rs 426.

Infosys and Wipro surged over 2.5% each to Rs 1,801 and Rs 440, respectively.

Grasim and Tata Steel gained 2% each at Rs 1,726 and Rs 652, respectively.

Bharti Airtel and ONGC were up around 1.5% each at Rs 727 and Rs 887, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Reliance Communications tumbled over 4% to Rs 420.

Reliance shed 3.4% at Rs 2,028. BHEL and Tata Motors slipped over 2% each to Rs 1,466 and Rs 393, respectively.

Ambuja Cements was down 1% at Rs 74.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Spice Telecom, on the back of Idea deal, topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 2,209 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 346.50 crore), Reliance (Rs 275.35 crore), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 196.40 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 182.80 crore).

Spice Telecom also led the volume chart with trades of around 28.60 crore shares followed by Reliance Natural Resources (2.65 crore), IFCI (2.05 crore), Reliance Petroleum (1.16 crore) and Ispat Industries (1.01 crore).
