Sensex ends up 92pts

The Sensex has finally ended (provisionally) at 16,693 - up 92 points. The Nifty ended (provisional) at 4,991 - up 38 points

After a strong opening on positive cues from Asian markets, the Sensex rallied to a high of 16,738. A higher advance tax number for the third quarter of the current fiscal also helped to buoy the market.

The market has been volatile in a narrow range through the day and is now up 73 points at 16,674.

Market heavy-weight, Reliance, is flat at Rs 1,020 after discovering oil in the KG gas basin for the third time. Telecom stocks, Bharti AIrtel and Reliance Communications gained. Bharti Airtel has added 3.6% to Rs 321. Reliance Communications has moved up 1.5% to Rs 172.

 

Metal stocks held on to gains. Hindalco has jumped 3.2% to Rs 142. Tata Steel has advanced 3% to Rs 573.

NTPC, ICICI Bank, DLF, ITC and Reliance Infrastructure were the other top gainers in the Sensex today.

However, ACC has slipped 1.7% to Rs 840. TCS and ONGC have dropped 1.3% to Rs 1,162.

Jaiprakash Associates, Grasim and Mahindra & Mahindra also dropped in trades today.

Zandu Pharma has topped the valuw chart on BSE with a turnover of Rs 137.43 crore, followed by Tata Steel (Rs 108.04 crore), Aban Offshore (Rs 63.28 crore), Reliance (Rs 63.26 crore) and Havells India (Rs 58.72 crore).

The volume chart was led by Austral Coke with trades of 6.96 million shares, followed by Kaashyap Technologies, Unitech and Radhe Developers.
