The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 75 points at 15,513, and slipped to a low of 15,465 in early deals. Fresh buying at lower levels helped the index recoup losses and rebound into positive zone. Renewed buying in banking, capital goods and metal stocks saw the index rally to a high of 15,830 - up 365 points from the day's low - towards the closing bell. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 203 points at 15,791. The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,689 stocks traded, 1,822 advanced, 804 declined and 63 were unchanged today. The NSE Nifty settled with a gain of 37 points at 4,747. INDEX MOVERS... HDFC Bank rallied 5.5% to Rs 1,376. HDFC gained nearly 5% at Rs 2,421. BHEL added 3.7% to Rs 1,777. Tata Steel was up 3.5% at Rs 679. ICICI Bank advanced nearly 3% to Rs 837. Cipla and Reliance Energy moved up nearly 2.5% each to Rs 218 and Rs 1,177, respectively. Larsen & Toubro gained over 2% at Rs 2,637.Ambuja Cements added 1.8% to Rs 120. Reliance, Hindalco and Infosys were up around 1.5% each at Rs 2,418, Rs 173 and Rs 1,480, respectively. ...AND THE SHAKERS Maruti and Hindustan Unilever slipped nearly 1.5% each to Rs 733 and Rs 244, respectively. Bharti Airtel and TCS declined 1% each to Rs 820 and Rs 877, respectively. MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS Orchid Chemicals topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 581.70 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 261 crore), Reliance (Rs 162.30 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 154.60 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 147 crore). Orchid Chemicals also led the volume chart with trades of around 2.53 crore shares followed by Sita Shree Foods (1.96 crore), Ispat Industries (1.11 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (84.70 lakh) and SAIL (68.30 lakh). |
