Sensex ends up over 800pts, BHEL gains 12%

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of over 300 points at 17,265, which also turned out to be the low for the day.

Sustained buying in heavyweights like L&T, Reliance and ICICI Bank and power scrips (BHEL, NTPC and REL) saw the index zoom to a high of 17,838 - an intra-day gain of nearly 890 points - towards the closing bell.

The Sensex finally closed with a huge gain of 817 points (4.8%) at 17,767.

The BSE Power index zoomed over 8% (295 points) to 3729.

The NSE Nifty finished with a gain of 273 points (5.5%) at 5,202.

The BSE market breadth was positive - out of nearly 2,790 scrips traded, over 2,000 logged gains today.

INDEX GAINERS

BHEL zoomed over 12% to Rs 2,232. Reliance Energy advanced nearly 10% to Rs 1,708. NTPC added 7% at Rs 201.

L&T moved up over 7% to Rs 3,507. ICICI Bank added nearly 6% at Rs 1,162. Reliance was up 5% at Rs 2,515.

RCom gained 9% at Rs 610. ONGC added nearly 9% at Rs 1,026. DLF was up 6% at Rs 865.

Hindalco finished with a gain of over 9% at Rs 164. HDFC, HDFC Bank, SBI and HUL closed with sharp gains today.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Jaiprakash Associates was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 501 crore followed by RNRL (Rs 339 crore), R-Power (Rs 303 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 237 crore) and Reliance Petroleum (Rs 230 crore).
