Of the 30 stocks that constitute the Sensex, 23 finished in the red. Metal scrips suffered heavily on the back of a meltdown in metal prices at the LME.

However, it was HDFC that contributed the maximum to wards overall losses. The scrip, which has a weightage of 3.82 per cent in the index, lost 7.49 per cent last week to close at Rs 630.10.

This translated to a 17.57-point loss to the overall index. Following closely on the heels were metal stocks Hindalco (down 8.88 per cent at Rs 1243.15) and Tata Steel (down 5.73 per cent at Rs 284.55).

Gains in Infosys, Satyam and Wipro were mainly responsible for halting further index slide.

While Infosys (up 4.49 per cent at Rs 1784.50), which has a weightage of 10.96 per cent in the index, led the way, contributing 26.75 points to the index, Satyam (up 1.66 per cent at Rs 401.25) and Wipro (up 1.77 per cent at Rs 649.65) followed some way behind. While rising oil prices continue to be a concern, inflation has eased off slightly.
