The Sensex has extended gains and touched a high of 14,797, up 297 points from the day's low.
The index is now near its high at 14,787, up 129 points.
HDFC has surged 4.5% to Rs 2,507. Mahindra & Mahindra has added 3% to Rs 734.
Tata Steel, SBI, Reliance Infrastructure, Bharti Airtel, NTPC, ICICI Bank, Jaiprakash Associates and Tata Power have also moved up 1-2% each.
However, Hero Honda and Infosys have slipped 1.5% each to Rs 1,362 and Rs 1,769, respectively.
Hindalco, Reliance Communications, DLF, Maruti Suzuki, Sterlite and Grasim have dropped over 1% each.
The market breadth is negative. Out of 2,573 stocks traded, 1,396 have declined while 1,095 have advanced.
