Sensex firm; Reliance, Zee notch up strong gains

The market is on an upmove since the early noon trades as steep rally in heavyweights and other select old economy stocks propelled the gains of the index to a high of 6,616.

While the Sensex has advanced 58 points to 6,608, the Nifty is up 12 points at 2,064.

Reliance has flared up 2.65% (Rs 15) to Rs 570. ITC has jumped 1.48% (Rs 20) to Rs 1,370, while HLL has gained 2% (Rs 3) to Rs 132. ONGC, however, though off-lows is still trading at lower levels at Rs 909 - down Rs 3.

Wipro (up Rs 10 to Rs 670) and Infosys (up Rs 13 to Rs 2,233) are holding on to their gains. Zee has shot up 4.19% (Rs 6) to Rs 146.

SBI is trading a per cent higher (Rs 6) at Rs 651. HDFC Bank has gained 1.45% (Rs 8) to Rs 550, and ICICI Bank is up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 427.

HPCL at Rs 322 (up Rs 5 or 1.66%), L&T at Rs 1,032 (up Rs 7), Tisco at Rs 390 (up Rs 8 or 1.99%) and Tata Power at Rs 353 (up Rs 6 or 1.86%) are trading with steady gains.

Tata Motors has logged 1.74% gains (Rs 7) to Rs 413. While Maruti is up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 406, Hero Honda is marginally up at Rs 541. Bajaj, however, is trading with a per cent loss (Rs 11) at Rs 1,073.

HDFC is down 1.45% (Rs 10) at Rs 713.
