The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 27 points at 9,161, but dropped to a low of 9,111 in early deals. After moving in and out of positive zones in morning deals, the index took off by early noon, and then there was no looking back... The index zoomed to an intra-day high of 9,274 - an intra-day swing of 163 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 130 points (1.4%) at 9,264. All the sectoral indices logged gains today. The BSE FMCG Index gained 1.5% (24 points) to 1,618. The BSE Auto Index moved up 1.4% (58 points) to 4,234. The BSE Bankex added 1.3% (64 points) to 4,967. The BSE Metal Index was up 1.2% (74 points) to 6,236. The BSE Teck Index was up over 1% (25 points) at 2,404. Declines were ahead of advances - out of 2,559 scrips traded, 1,327 declined, 1,162 advanced and 70 were unchanged today. Tata Motors zoomed 6% (Rs 35) to Rs 626. Maruti gained over 2% (Rs 13) to Rs 662. ACC advanced 5.6% (Rs 29) to Rs 558. Grasim added over 2% (Rs 30) to Rs 1,410. Gujarat Ambuja was also up over 2% (Rs 2) at Rs 84. SBI moved up 2% (Rs 18) to Rs 927. While ONGC was up Rs 17 at Rs 1,182, Reliance gained Rs 9 to Rs 872. While ITC was up 2.6% (Rs 4) at Rs 142, HLL was up Rs 2 at Rs 188. Wipro aded 2.8% (Rs 12) to Rs 449. Satyam was up 2% (Rs 16) to Rs 687. TCS was up Rs 18 at Rs 1,668. HDFC moved up 3.7% (Rs 42) to Rs 1,171. L&T added Rs 24 to Rs 1,770. Tata Steel was up Rs 7 at Rs 370. Ranbaxy was up Rs 6 at Rs 390. HDFC Bank, Hindalco and Bharti also finished with gains. Reliance Energy dropped Rs 5 to Rs 640. Tata Power, Cipla and Bajaj also declined. Sugar scrips rallied sharply today. Bajaj Hindusthan zoomed 19% (Rs 46) to Rs 283. Renuka Sugar advanced 12% (Rs 45) to Rs 431. Upper Ganges Sugar, Dhampur Sugar, Balrampur Chini, Sakthi Sugar, EID Parry, Thiru Arooran Sugar and Bannari Amman Sugar also logged sharp gains. Bank stocks also moved up today. BoI gained 7% to Rs 124. Kotak Bank added 6% to Rs 242. Union Bank was up 4% at Rs 119. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, PNB, BoB, Canara, UTI Bank and OBC also finished with gains. Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 538 crore followed by ABG Shipyard (Rs 199 crore), SBI (Rs 129 crore), Tata Motors (Rs 111 crore) and Titan (Rs 103 crore). |
