The Sensex opened with a positive gap of points at 31 points at 7,717, which turned out to be the low for the day. Sustained buying in heavyweights saw the index zoom to a high of 7,906 - an intra-day gain of 220 points from the last weekend close. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 207 points (2.7%) at 7,892. All the sectoral indices finished with gains today. The BSE Consumer Durables Index zoomed over 12% (259 points) to 2,348. The BSE FMCG Index advanced 3.5% (46 points) to 1,387. The BSE Teck Index moved up 2.7% (55 points) to 2,070. The BSE Metal Index was up 2.7% (145 points) to 5,535. The BSE Bankex, Auto, PSU, Oil & Gas and Healthcare indices also closed at higher levels today. Advances were ahead of declines 1.6:1 - out of 2,411 scrips traded, 1,468 moved up, 883 declined and 60 were unchanged today. Infosys zoomed over 4% (Rs 107) to Rs 2,524. Satyam advanced 6% (Rs 34) to Rs 606. While TCS was up Rs 38 at Rs 1,400, Wipro added Rs 8 to Rs 365. SBI advanced 3.4% (Rs 27) to Rs 838. Reliance gained 2.9% (Rs 21) to Rs 763. ONGC was up Rs 11 at Rs 929. While HLL was up Rs 4 at Rs 161, ITC added 4% (Rs 5) to Rs 120. Maruti zoomed 6.6% (Rs 34) to Rs 550. Bajaj was up 2.7% (Rs 45) at Rs 1,705. Tata Motors added Rs 12 to Rs 473. Hero Honda was up Rs 11 at Rs 707. Dr. Reddy's was firm right through the session, and closed with a gain of Rs 16 at Rs 807. Cipla was up Rs 12 at Rs 360. BHEL gained 5.5% (Rs 60) to Rs 1,150. L&T moved up over 4% (Rs 56) to Rs 1,399. HDFC added 3% (Rs 29) to Rs 968. ICICI Bank, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Tata Steel, NTPC, ACC and Grasim also finished with gains. Bharti declined 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 323. Hindalco slipped 3% (Rs 4) to Rs 114. HDFC Bank was down Rs 2 at Rs 606. Titan zoomed 25% (Rs 101) to Rs 496. Videocon International gained over 8% to Rs 76. The rally in the two scrips saw the BSE Consumer Durables index gain 12% today. Pritish Nandy Communications zoomed 20% to Rs 53. India Cements advanced 14% (Rs 11) to Rs 88. Suzlon gained 9% (Rs 61) to Rs 715. Vijaya Bank dropped 9% to Rs 53. Ipca Labs was down 5% at Rs 400. Rayomd declined 5% to Rs 373. Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 147 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 113 crore), Titan (Rs 112 crore), SBI (Rs 111 crore) and Suzlon (Rs 99 crore). |
