Sensex gains 29pts, REL, L&T zoom over 3%

The Sensex opened a tad higher at 11,909, up four points from its previous close. Steady buying in the market saw the index rally to a high of 11,983.

The index, thereafter, displayed range-bound movement throughout the day. Some profit-taking towards the close saw the index pare gains and finish with a marginal gain of 29 points at 11,933.

The market breadth was positive - out 2,615 stocks traded, 1,473 advanced, 1,054 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Reliance Energy (REL) advanced 3.5% each to Rs 2,555 and Rs 481, respectively.

Bharti Airtel rallied over 2% to Rs 427. Hindalco and Tata Steel added 1.5% each to Rs 182 and Rs 522, respectively.

Wipro and Reliance gained 1% each at Rs 521 and Rs 1,137, respectively.

ONGC slipped nearly 2% to Rs 1,206. HLL shed 1.4% to Rs 239.

HDFC Bank declined 1.3% to Rs 863. Reliance Communications, TCS and BHEL were down around 1% each at Rs 301, Rs 995 and Rs 2,267, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliane topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 138 crore followed by Hindustan Zinc (Rs 122 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 75 crore), Sterlite (71.33 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 69.60 crore).

IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around 74 lakh shares followed by Tele Data (72.82 lakh), Hindustan Motors (42.10 lakh), Birla VXL (25.46 lakh) and Unitech (24.45 lakh).
