The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 22 points at 11,488, but soon slipped into negative zone. Selling in early trades saw the index slip to a low of 11,376 - down 112 points in just five minutes from the day's open. Fresh buying at lower levels saw the index recoup losses and rebound into positive zone. Auto, banking and technology stocks witnessed some buying today. Short covering towards the close saw the Sensex spurt to a high of 11,532 - up 156 points from the day's low. The index finally ended with a gain of 46 points at 11,512. The BSE Auto, Bankex and the Teck indices were up over 1% each to 4979, 5192 and 2822, respectively. The market breadth was positive - out of 2,571 stocks traded, 1,451 advanced, 1,037 declined and the rest were unchanged today. INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS Bajaj Auto advanced 2.3% to Rs 2,774. Infosys and Grasim added 2% each to Rs 1,798 and Rs 2,240, respectively. Reliance, ACC, Tata Motors and Satyam were up over 1% each at Rs 1,068, Rs 913, Rs 859 and Rs 801, respectively. Reliance Energy, Ranbaxy and ONGC dropped nearly 2% each to Rs 448, Rs 401 and Rs 1,190, respectively. Dr.Reddy's slipped 1.5% to Rs 1,473. Hero Honda was down 1.3% to Rs 696. HDFC, Tata Steel and HLL declined nearly 1% each to Rs 1,290, Rs 508 and Rs 236, respectively. GMR MAKES SILENT DEBUT While GMR Infrastructure topped the value and volume chart on its listing day, the stock did not make much buzz. The stock opened at Rs 215 when compared with its issue price of Rs 210. The stock moved between a high of Rs 220 and a low of Rs 205 before settling at Rs 210. The stock clocked a turnover of Rs 153.40 crore on the back of 72.10 lakh shares traded on the BSE. VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS Reliance followed debutant GMR with a turnover of Rs 107.82 crore followed by Mahindra Gesco (Rs 103.19 crore), Bombay Dyeing (Rs 90.33 crore) and Tata Steel (Rs 51.91 crore). LML followed GMR with trades of around 68 lakh shares followed by Alchemist (53.66 lakh), G V Films (40 lakh) and IDFC (34 lakh). |
