Sensex gains 47pts on late buying, L&T up 2.5%

The Sensex opened marginally (12 points) higher at 11,584. Uncertainity in early deals saw the index slip to a low of 11,552. The index, thereafter, moved in an extremely narrow range of 11,560-11,600 for most part of the trading session.

A late bout of buying saw the index spurt to a high of 11,633 - up 81 points from the day's low. The Sensex finally settled with a gain of 47 points at 11,620.

The BSE Metal index spurted over 1% to 8483. The Oil & Gas and PSU indices were the other notable gainers 5655 and 5516, respectively.

The market breadth was positive - out of 2,549 stocks traded, 1,458 advanced, 1,021 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Larsen & Toubro surged over 2.5% to Rs 2,415. Hindalco and Ranbaxy moved up around 2% each to Rs 177 and Rs 396, respectively.

SBI and Gujarat Ambuja advanced over 1.5% each to Rs 919 and Rs 116, respectively.

HLL, Grasim and Reliance were up over 1% each at Rs 240, Rs 2,229 and Rs 1,122, respectively.

Cipla and HDFC slipped 1.3% each to Rs 244 and Rs 1,264, respectively.

Bajaj Auto was down 1% at Rs 2,722.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Debutant Tech Mahindra topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 454 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 85 crore), SBI (Rs 55 crore), Videocon Industries (Rs 50 crore) and Sterlite Optical (Rs 43 crore).

Tech Mahindra also led the volume chart with trades of around 82.20 lakh shares followed by G V Films (34.85 lakh), Essar Oil (30.92 lakh), Sterlite Optical (23.88 lakh) and SAIL (21.27 lakh).
