Sensex gains 87pts, ends above 11,700

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 32 points at 11,652, and did not bother to look back today. Sustained buying in the market saw the index rally to a high of 11,740. The Sensex finally settled with a gain of 87 points at 11,707.

The BSE PSU and Teck indices advanced over 1% each to 5601 and 2870, respectively. The Metal index, however, slipped 1% to 8393.

The market breadth turned marginally negative at close - out of 2,584 stocks traded, 1,273 declined, 1,248 advanced and the rest were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Reliance Communications rallied over 3% to Rs 309. Maruti and ITC surged around 2.5% each to Rs 855 and Rs 185, respectively.

Wipro and NTPC moved up over 2% each to Rs 525 and Rs 127, respectively.

HDFC, ONGC, Cipla and Infosys advanced 2% each to Rs 1,290, Rs 1,221, Rs 249 and Rs 1,806, respectively.

BHEL gained 1.7% at Rs 2,284, and ICICI Bank was up 1.4% at Rs 596.

HLL and Tata Steel slipped 2% each to Rs 235 and Rs 517, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 120 crore followed by Tech Mahindra (Rs 112 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 76 crore), HDFC Bank (Rs 58 crore) and Mahindra Gesco (Rs 58 crore).

G V Films led the volume chart with trades of around 28.85 lakh shares followed by Hindalco (Rs 22 lakh), Shah Alloy (21 lakh), Tech Mahindra (20 lakh) and Indiabulls (19 lakh).
