Following yesterday's smart recovery, the Sensex opened with a positive gap of eight points at 10,582. And, as mentioned in our Research Alert: Caught Short!, the index soon zoomed over 100 points within the next few minutes. All round buying thereafter saw the index scale past its previous top of 10,753. Index scrips witnessed some profit-taking after that, but the Sensex recovered soon and zoomed to a new, all-time intra-day high of 10,782. The index finally finished with a huge gain of 1.8% (192 points) at 10,765 thus ending a roller-coaster week with a gain of 170 points. The BSE Auto, Capital Goods, FMCG and Teck indices soared over 2% each to 5309, 8126, 2037 and 2549, respectively. While the Midcap Index moved up 1.2% to 5048, the Smallcap Index added 1% to 6372. The market breadth was fairly positive. Out of total of 2,621 stocks traded, 1,446 advanced, 1,100 declined and 75 were unchanged today. Satyam surged 3.7% to Rs 815. Infosys rallied 2.6% to Rs 2,915, and TCS advanced 2.4% to Rs 1,764. Wipro was up 1.4% at Rs 519. While HLL gained 3% at Rs 252, ITC added 2.3% to Rs 177. HDFC advanced 3.4% to Rs 1,323. ICICI Bank was up 1.8% at Rs 613, and SBI added 1.6% to Rs 920. Bajaj Auto zoomed over 3% to Rs 2,754. Hero Honda rallied 2.7% to Rs 904. Tata Motors moved up 2.4% to Rs 896, and Maruti gained 1.4% at Rs 878. Larsen & Toubro surged 2.9% to Rs 2,513, and BHEL added 1.6% to Rs 2,127. Tata Power was up 2.4% at Rs 577. Cipla and Dr.Reddy's spurted 1.4% each to Rs 583 and Rs 1,351, respectively. Cement stocks witnessed some profit-taking towards the closing bell today. While Grasim finished almost flat at Rs 1,889, ACC and Gujarat Ambuja pared gains but were still up over 1% each at Rs 760 and Rs 99, respectively. While 311 stocks hit their upper limits, 129 touched their lower limits today. Rayban zoomed 20% to Rs 91.50. Kalpatru Power, State Bank of Mysore, Tulip IT, GTL, Areva, Salora International, Reliance Natural Resources, Suzlon, Punjab Tractors, RPG Transmission, DCW, Crompton Greaves and MTNL finished with sharp gains today. Jindal Photo, Jagran Prakashan, Nocil, Piramyd Retail, Ramco System, IPC Labs, Bombay Dyeing, Kotak Bank, JSW Steel, Neyveli Lignite, Syngenta, Sterling Biotech and National Aluminium declined 2-4% each. Reliance Communication Ventures (RCoVL) topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 182.05 crore followed by KEC International (Rs 168.48 crore), Debutant Gitanjali Gems (Rs 154.75 crore), SBI (Rs 137.98 crore) and Infosys (Rs 128.40 crore). Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 1.19 crore shares followed by Triveni Engineering (89.19 lakh), Gitanjali Gems (87.13 lakh), Mysore Cement (65.48 lakh) and RCoVL (60.67 lakh). |
