Sensex nears a new peak, up 164pts

The Sensex is closing on its all-time intra-day peak of 10,753 hit on Tuesday. The index has touched a high of 10,742, and is now up 164 points at 10,738.

ACC and Gujarat Ambuja have surged over 3% each to Rs 773 and Rs 101, respectively. Grasim has added 1.8% to Rs 1,919.

HDFC and Larsen & Toubro have rallied nearly 3% each to Rs 1,317 and Rs 2,511, respectively. Cipla has gained 2.5% at Rs 589.

Hindalco, Tata Steel, Bharti Tele and Tata Motors have moved up over 2% each to Rs 161, Rs 462, Rs 391 and Rs 892, respectively.

ICICI Bank, Hero Honda, BHEL, SBI, Maruti, ITC, NTPC, Ranbaxy, Tata Power and Satyam are up 1-2% each.

The market breadth continues to remain bullish. Out of total of 2,459 stocks traded so far, 1,602 have advanced, 793 have declined and the rest are unchanged.
