Sensex pares gains, ends up 96pts

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of nearly 400 points at 16,023 on strong positive cues from the global markets. The index zoomed to a high of 16,237 in early deals, but could not hold the gains....

Selling gained momentum in the latter half of the trading session, and the index dropped to a low of 15,719 - down over 500 points from the day's high.

The Sensex finally ended (provisional) with a gain of 96 points at 15,723.

The NSE Nifty zoomed to a high of 4,917 - up 177 points - , but pared gains and eventually ended (provisional) on flat note at 4745 - up six points.
