The markets have turned volatile in the last one hour of trades. After opening on a soft note, the Sensex rallied to a high of 18,542, but has slipped back into the negative zone. The index tumbled a low of 18,270 - down 272 points from the day's high.
The Sensex is now down 183 points at 18,270. The NSE Nifty has declined 53 points to 5474.
The FMCG and Realty space is weighing on the markets. The FMCG index has dropped 1.3% to 3272 and the realty index has declined 1.2% at 2249.
Mahindra & Mahindra has plunged 3.4% to Rs 682. Larsen & Toubro, ITC, DLF and TCS have declined over 2% each to Rs 1,593, Rs 156, Rs 239 and Rs 1,162, respectively.
Hindustan Unilever, Tata Power, NTPC and Reliance are also down 2% each.
However, Bajaj Auto has rallied 1.7% to Rs 1,232. Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Tata Motors are the other prominent gainers.
The market breadth is almost neutral now - 1,292 stocks are advancing while 1,278 have declined on the BSE.
