Sensex scales new highs

The Sensex created a fresh record by touching an all-time, intra-day high of 7,861.26 on August 12. The Sensex also set a new closing peak of 7,816.51 on August 11 before ending the week at 7,767.49 as against the last weekend close of 7754.00 - a net gain of 13.49 points.

This was the 15th straight weekly gain for the Sensex, which has been scaling new heights since May.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have slowed down activity despite an acceptable hike announced by the US Federal Reserve. Asian and European funds were active on the bourses during the week. FIIs pumped in about Rs 539 crore in the first two days of the week, but withdrew Rs 101.50 crore in the next two sessions.

Local funds reported net purchases of Rs 424.98 crore on August 10 and 11 after initial sales of Rs 190.20 crore in the first two days of the week.
