Sensex sheds 285pts; financial, metal stocks weigh

Mirroring negative global cues, the Sensex opened 129 points lower at 8,763. The index, thereafter, exhibited lacklustre movement for most part of the trading day.

The selling intensified in late noon trades on further weakness in banking and metal stocks. The Sensex touched a low of 8,564, and finally ended with a loss of 285 points at 8,607.

The BSE Bankex plunged nearly 5% to 4,034, and the Metal index shed 4.3% at 4,489.

The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,455 stocks traded, 1,638 declined, 731 advanced and 86 were unchanged today.

INDEX SHAKERS...

Reliance Infrastructrue slumped over 9% to Rs 446. Tata Steel and ICICI Bank plunged around 7.5% each to Rs 159 and Rs 304, respectively.

 

Reliance Communications tumbled 6.5% to Rs 145. Jaiprakash Associates shed 5% at Rs 63.

HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro and TCS slipped around 4.5% each to Rs 846, Rs 585 and Rs 460, respectively.

ONGC dropped 4% to Rs 664. Hindustan Unilever and Grasim declined 3.5% each to Rs 245 and Rs 1,324, respectively.

Reliance, SBI, ACC and Bharti Airtel were down around 3% each at Rs 1,225, Rs 995, Rs 524 and Rs 618, respectively.

NTPC, HDFC, Tata Motors and ITC were down around 2.5% each.

...AND THE MOVER

Mahindra & Mahindra, up 2.6% at Rs 318, was the sole gainer among the index stocks today.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Debutant Edserv Softsystems topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 394 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 205.75 crore), Educomp Solutions (Rs 116.40 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 98 crore) and SBI (Rs 88.25 crore).

Edserv Softsystems led the volume chart with trades of around 3.41 crore shares followed by Cals Refineries (1.41 crore), Reliance Petroleum (89.97 lakh), Satyam (77.66 lakh) and Unitech (69 lakh).
