Sensex slides 336pts; SBI down 3%

The index moved in a range of 242 points between 16,863 (low) and 16,105 (high) before finally settling with a loss of 336 points at 16,907.

The market breadth was negative - out of 2,791 stocks traded, 1,040 advanced, 1,684 declined and 67 were unchanged today.

The NSE Nifty ended with a loss of 92 points at 5,025.

THE SHAKERS...

Tata Steel and Reliance Infrastructure tumbled 4% each to Rs 661 and Rs 1,322, respectively.

ICICI Bank plunged 3.4% to Rs 880, while SBI has slipped 3.3% to Rs 1,607.

Reliance Communications declined 3.1% to Rs 585.

Jaiprakash Associates, Ambuja Cements and Larsen & Toubro dropped 2.6% each at Rs 246, Rs 104 and Rs 2,917, respectively.

 

HDFC Bank and ITC slipped 2.4% each at Rs 1,380 and Rs 223, respectively.

HDFC was trading at 2,627 - down 2.3%.

Mahindra & Mahindra and DLF were down 2.2% each to Rs 652 and Rs 621, respectively.

Reliance, NTPC and Maruti declined around 2% each to Rs 2,617, Rs 179 and Rs 800, respectively.

ONGC and Tata Steel plunged 1.5% each to Rs 924 and Rs 908, respectively.

Wipro, ACC, BHEL and Ranbaxy were the other major losers.

...AND THE MOVER

Hindalco was the only gainer among the Sensex stocks, marginally up 0.2% at Rs 198.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance Capital led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 225.63 crore followed by IFCI (Rs 201.77 crore), Cairn India (Rs 189.47 crore), Reliance Power (Rs 180.56 crore) and Reliance (Rs 176 crore).

Ispat topped the volume chart with trades of around 4.32 crore shares followed by  IFCI (3.13 crore), Nagarjuna Fertilisers (1.11 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.10 crore) and Cybermat (1 crore).
