Sensex slips 61pts, SBI gains 4.5%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 46 points at 10,788. The index thereafter moved in an extremely narrow range through the morning trades.

Selling in noon deals saw the index slip to a low of 10,604 - down 184 points from the open. The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 61 points at 10,680.

While the Mid-cap index spurted over 1% to 4278, the Small-cap index added 0.7% to 5065.

The market breadth was slightly positive - out of 2,462 stocks traded, 1,362 advanced, 1,017 declined and 83 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

SBI advanced 4.5% to Rs 797. Dr.Reddy's gained 2.5% at Rs 1,402.

ACC and Grasim surged over 2% each to Rs 849 and Rs 2,118, respectively.

Ranbaxy moved up 1.7% to Rs 372. HDFC Bank was up 1% at Rs 796.

TCS went ex-bonus today. The stock moved in a range of Rs 920 and Rs 950 before settling at Rs 928.

Bharti Airtel and Bajaj Auto dropped nearly 3% each to Rs 385 and Rs 2,475, respectively.

Hindalco and Reliance shed 2% each to Rs 162 and Rs 980, respectively.

Wipro, Maruti, Infosys and Tata Motors slipped 1.5% each to Rs 768, Rs 768, Rs 1,629 and Rs 728, respectively.

HLL and ITC were down 1% each at Rs 242 and Rs 165, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

SBI topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 184 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 171 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 96.50 crore), Century Textiles (Rs 73 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 70.60 crore).

G V Films led the volume chart with trades of around 75.75 lakh shares followed by SAIL (50.50 lakh), Hindalco (28.40 lakh), Rico Auto (27.40 lakh) and Unitech (26.32 lakh).
