Sensex surges 67 pts, tech stocks shine

The Sensex opened with a gain of 10 points at 6,407 over its last close, and remained in positive territory through the trading session today. While the index breached the 6,450 levels in mid-morning trades, profit-taking in select counters thereafter saw it come off its highs and display a range-bound trend.

The market witnessed a sharp turnaround in mid-noon trades as steep surge in tech and other select heavyweights propelled the gains of the index in late trades.

After touching an intra-day high of 6,472, the Sensex finally wrapped up the session with a gain of 67 points at 6,465. The Nifty, too, exhibited strength and moved up 17 points to 2,025.

ONGC gained a per cent (Rs 9) to Rs 884. While HLL gained 2% (Rs 3) to Rs 133, Reliance was up a rupee at Rs 549.

Infosys advanced nearly 2% (Rs 39) to Rs 2,118 ahead of its quarterly results. While Satyam notched up 2.26% gains (Rs 9) to Rs 410, Wipro, however, ended a per cent lower (Rs 7) at Rs 646.

ICICI Bank flared up 3.53% (Rs 14) to Rs 408. While SBI clocked a per cent gain (Rs 4) to Rs 646, HDFC Bank was down a rupee at Rs 558.

Bajaj jumped 1.39% (Rs 15) to Rs 1,081. While Maruti moved up 1.54% (Rs 6) to Rs 408, Tata Motors ended with a steady gain of Rs 2 at Rs 421.

ACC rose 1.58% (Rs 6) to Rs 363. Grasim and Gujarat Ambuja ended with steady gains at Rs 1,200 and Rs 406, respectively.

HPCL logged 1.59% gains (Rs 5) to Rs 323, and L&T was up a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 967. While Tata Power rose 2.14% (Rs 7) to Rs 348, Tisco gained nearly 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 389.

Zee, however, lost 2.58% (Rs 4) to Rs 138.
