Sensex swings 400pts, ends down 100pts

It was an extremely volatile day on Dalal Street today.

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 23 points at 14,168, and slipped below the 14K mark to a low of 13,958 in early deals.

Buying in heavyweights saw the index bounce strongly, and zoom to a high of 14,364 points in early noon deals - an intra-day swing of over 400 points.

The mood swung again, the other way, by late noon, and the index plunged around 200 points. The Sensex recovered lost ground towards the closing bell, and finally closed with a loss of 100 points at 14,091.

The market breadth was negative - out of 2,605 scrips traded, 1,484declined and 1,056 logged gains.

INDEX GAINERS & LOSERS

Hindalco dropped nearly 5% to Rs 142. Reliance Communications slipped over 3% to Rs 441. Infosys declined nearly 2% to Rs 2,308.

L&T was down nearly 3% at Rs 1,613. Tata Steel, Maruti, HDFC and HDFC Bank dropped nearly 2% each today.

Bajaj gained over 3% to Rs 3,046.  ONGC moved up over 2% to Rs 885. Bharti was up 1.5% at Rs 740.

MOST TRADED COUNTERS

Akruti Nirman was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 218 crore followed by Reliance Communications (Rs 150 crore), Global Broadcast (Rs 130 crore) and Unitech (Rs 121 crore).
