The Sensex is now up 223 points at 9,791. Earlier the day, the index opened 65 points higher at 9,633, and after extending gains slipped into red to a low of 9,547 - down 192 points from the day's high.
Tata Steel has zoomed 7.6% to Rs 211, while Jaiprakash Associates has surged 7.5% to Rs 84. Tata Motors has soared nearly 7% to Rs 184.
ACC has gained 5.2% to Rs 594. Larsen & Toubro has surged 4.8% to Rs 682. Reliance Communications has gained 4.3% to Rs 175.
Mahindra & Mahindra and SBI moved up around 4% each to Rs 385 and Rs 1,062, respectively.
Hindalco, Ranbaxy and Reliance Infrastructure have rallied around 3.5% each to Rs 52, Rs 163 and Rs 520, respectively.
Grasim, DLF and BHEL are up nearly 3% each to Rs 1,580, Rs 170 and Rs 1,517, respectively.
TCS, Sun Pharma and Bharti Airtel are the other major gainers
