Sensex up 109pts; Siemens zooms 12%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 17 points at 8,761, which turned out to be the low for the day. Sustained buying saw the index zoom to a high of 8,864 towards the closing bell. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 109 points (1.3%) at 8,853.

All the sectoral indices finished with gains today. The BSE Capital Goods Index zoomed over 3% (172 points) to 5,294. The BSE FMCG Index gained over 2% (36 points) to 1,565.

The BSE Auto Index moved up 1.5% (59 points) to 4,018. The BSE Teck Index was up 1.4% (32 points) at 2,286. The BSE Bankex, Healthcare, PSU, Metal and Oil & Gas indices also moved up today.

Advances continued to be ahead of declines - out of 2,564 scrips traded, 1,344 advanced, 1,154 declined and 66 were unchanged today.

HLL zoomed 5.7% (Rs 10) to Rs 187. SBI was up Rs 7 at Rs 907, and ITC gained Rs 2 to Rs 136.

Infosys moved up 1.5% (Rs 39) to Rs 2,740. Satyam advanced Rs 15 to Rs 657. TCS was up Rs 9 at Rs 1,533.

Maruti gained 3.5% (Rs 21) to Rs 620. Tata Motors was up 3.3% (Rs 18) at Rs 574.

BHEL zoomed 3.5% (Rs 47) to Rs 1,385. HDFC added 3% (Rs 32) to Rs 1,118. L&T gained 2.7% (Rs 44) to Rs 1,644. Ranbaxy moved up Rs 9 to Rs 371. ACC, Bharti, ICICI Bank, Grasim and Reliance Energy also finished with gains.

ONGC was down Rs 5 at Rs 1,020. Reliance declined a rupee to Rs 843. Tata Power and Hindalco also declined.

Capital goods scrips had a dream run today. Siemens zoomed 12% (Rs 308) to Rs 2,945. Bharat Electronics gained 6% (Rs 48) to Rs 878.  ABB was up over 4% (Rs 81) at Rs 1,933. Alfa Laval, BEML, Greaves Cotton, and Ingersoll Rand also finished at higher levels today.

Sugar scrips, too, rallied sharply today. Upper Ganges Sugar advanced 10% (Rs 23) to Rs 248. Mawana sugar gained 8% (Rs 7) to Rs 101. KM Sugar, Dwarakesh Sugar, Renuka Sugar, Bajaj Hindustan and Balrampur Chini also finished with gains.

Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 180 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 159 crore), SBI (Rs 105 crore), Infosys (Rs 81 crore) and Tata Steel (Rs 74 crore).
