Sensex up 143pts, Tata Steel gains 5%

Mirroring the solid strength in the global markets, the Sensex opened with a positive gap of 69 points at 10,735. The start of a new series in the derivatives contracts attracted more buyers, which saw the index rally to a high of 11,051 - up 385 points from its previous close.

The last session of trading saw some volatility, and the index pared most of its gains at one stage before bouncing back to close with a gain of 143 points at 10,809.

Eventually, the index ended lower for the third straight week - down 1.2% (130 points).

The BSE Metal index gained 3.5% at 8,920 today, and the Capital Goods index surged 2.3% to 7,536. The Auto, Bankex and the Healthcare indices were the other major gainers today.

The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices gained around 2.5% each at 5,168 and 6,558, respectively.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Tata Steel surged nearly 5% to Rs 538.

Bajaj Auto zoomed 5% to Rs 2,924. Hero Honda rallied 3.6% to Rs 827. Tata Motors and Maruti were up 1.5% each at Rs 815 and Rs 791, respectively.

Cipla surged 4.7% to Rs 234. Ranbaxy spurted over 1% to Rs 424.

Infosys advanced over 3% to Rs 2,927.  Reliance gained 1% to Rs 958.

Larsen & Toubro added 3% to Rs 2,363. BHEL was up 2.2% at Rs 1,944.

Gujarat Ambuja surged 2.7% to Rs 99. Grasim gained over 2% at Rs 1,953.

HLL moved up 2.4% to Rs 243. ITC was up 1.4% at Rs 183.

While HDFC Bank rallied 2.4% to Rs 772, HDFC added 1.6% to Rs 1,171. ICICI Bank was up 1% at Rs 563.

ONGC slipped over 2% to Rs 1,177. Wirpo shed nearly 2% to Rs 475, and Bharti Airtel slipped 1.5% to Rs 387.

OTHER GAINERS & LOSERS

Gujarat NRE Coke and Vijaya Bank zoomed over 15% each to Rs 85 and Rs 47, respectively. Strides Arcolab, Mahindra Ugine, Indiabulls, Karnataka Bank, Ganesh Forgings, Gail, J&K Bank, Titan, Dabur, JSW Steel, Hinduja TMT and Neyveli Lignite rallied 8-14% each today.

Motherson Sumi slipped over 6% to Rs 91. Indorama Textiles, Ansal Infrastructure, Bajaj Auto Finance, Reliance Industrial Infrastructure, Godrej Industries, Crompton Greaves, Merck, MICO, HCL Infosys, GMDC, Jindal Saw Pipes, Syngenta, Abbott India and Maharashtra Seamless were the other prominent losers today.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 258 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 206 crore), Larsen & Toubro (Rs 73.60 crore), Mahindra Gesco (Rs 72.86 crore) and ACC (Rs 68.60 crore).

SAIL led the volume chart with trades of around 65 lakh shares followed by Reliance Petro (44 lakh), IFCI (42.66 lakh), Gujarat Ambuja (41.61 lakh) and G V Films (40.35 lakh).
