The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 45 points at 10,269. Continued buying in select heavyweights saw the index flare up to a new, all-time intra-day high of 10,305 - up 81 points. The index, thereafter, displayed solid strength for the major part of the trading day. However, a late bout of selling saw the index pare gains and drop to a low of 10,228. The Sensex finally settled with a marginal gain of 20 points at 10,244. The BSE FMCG Index rallied 1.7% to 1943. The Auto, PSU and Metal indices were the other notable gainers at 4923, 5683 and 7150, respectively. The Bankex dropped 1.5% to 5010, and the Capital Goods Index slipped 1.3% to 3151. Declines beat advances in the ratio of 1.7:1. Out of 2,561 stocks traded, 1,580 declined, 909 advanced and 72 were unchanged today. Bajaj Auto touched an intra-day high of Rs 2,693, but finally ended with a gain of 3.1% at Rs 2,622. HLL surged to a high of Rs 252 before settling with a gain of 2.9% at Rs 248. Tata Steel and ONGC spurted 2% each to Rs 419 and Rs 1,197, respectively. NTPC (Rs 132), ITC (Rs 166) and Satyam (Rs 781) were up 1.5% each. Wipro gained 1% at Rs 521. Ranbaxy dropped 2.6% to Rs 451. Grasim shed 2.5% to Rs 1,634. Hindalco (Rs 154), SBI (Rs 853), Gujarat Ambuja (Rs 84.75) and ICICI Bank (Rs 586) declined around 1.5% each. BHEL slipped 1% to Rs 1,894. Inox was listed today at a 54% premium at Rs 185 as aginst the issue price of Rs 120. The stock swung between a high of Rs 200 and low of Rs 168 before ending Day 1 at Rs 175 - a gain of 46% when compared with the issue price. Inox topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 299.57 crore followed by Reliance Capital Ventures (Rs 186.43 crore), Jagran (Rs 95.01 crore), Satyam (Rs 89.23 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 88.46 crore). Inox also led the volume chart with trades of around 1.65 crore shares followed by Reliance Capital Ventures (76.17 lakh), SAIL (57.69 lakh), Reliance Capital (38.94 lakh) and Jagran (36.42 lakh).
