The Sensex moved in a very narrow range of 84-odd points today. The index opened flat at 13,847 (up two points), and slipped to a low of 13,829 before bouncing to a new all-time intra-day high of 13,913. The Sensex finally settled with a marginal gain of 29 points at 13,874. The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices were up nearly 1% each at 5819 and 6777, respectively. The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,650 stocks traded, 1,491 advanced, 1,086 declined and 73 were unchanged today. INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS Tata Motors rallied over 4% to Rs 879. Maruti was up 1% at Rs 961. ACC flared up 3.5% to Rs 1,173. Grasim added 1% to Rs 2,785. Larsen & Toubro advanced over 3% to Rs 1,422. BHEL moved up 2.6% to Rs 2,587. Reliance Energy gained 3% at Rs 556. NTPC was up 2% at Rs 151. Satyam, HDFC Bank and Wipro slipped nearly 2% each to Rs 458, Rs 1,101 and Rs 590, respectively. HDFC shed over 1% to Rs 1,622. VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS Parsvnath topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 302 crore followed by Era Constructions (Rs 129.35 crore), Unitech (Rs 104 crore), Action Construction (Rs 90.40 crore) and Bajaj Hindustan (Rs 89.40 crore). Shiva Cement led the volume chart with trades of around 88 lakh shares followed by Parsvnath (60.80 lakh), Welspun Gujarat (60.45 lakh), Bella Steel (52.85 lakh) and Nandan Exim (41 lakh). |
