Sensex witnesses fastest 600 point rally in five years

 Earlier, in March 1992 - from March 20 to March 25 - in three trading sessions the Sensex gained 674.16 points and rose from 3128.01 to 3802.17. In the same year, between February 19 and March 9, in nine trading days the Sensex jumped 1165.54 points - from 2382.07 to 3547.61. Prior to that in 1999, between April 26 and May 11, the Sensex gained 655.22 points in nine trading days.  In the current 632-point rally, all 30 Sensex stocks have gained in the range of three to 15 per cent in five trading days.  Ten stocks, namely Larsen & Tourbo, Grasim Industries, Hero Honda, Satyam Computer, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Maruti Udyog, Tata Power, HDFC, BHEL and ITC have gained more than 10 per cent.

 Infosys Technologies, Wipro, ACC, Bajaj Auto and Tata Steel's market price appreciated between 9-10 per cent and that of Reliance Industries, Hindustan Lever and Tata Consultancy Services in the range of 6 to 9 per cent during the period.  Larsen and Tourbo gained 15 per cent in last five trading sessions. The market price of the company moved from Rs 1,343.05 on October 28 to Rs 1,539.95 on Tuesday.  Grasim Industries is the second largest gainer with a 14 per cent gain (from Rs 1,106.80 to Rs 1,258) followed by Hero Honda (13.26 per cent gain, from Rs 696.30 to Rs 788.65), Satyam Computer (12.3 per cent, from Rs 572.40 to Rs 642.40) and Dr Reddy's Laboratories (12 per cent, from Rs 791.20 to Rs 886.50).  Infosys Technolgies gained 9.70 per cent to Rs 2,651.15 (Rs 2,416.69), Wipro added 9.89 per cent to Rs 391.80 (Rs 356.55) and Hindustan Lever 8 per cent to Rs 169.85 (Rs 157.40). SBI, Bharati Tele-Ventures, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and ONGC increased in the range of 3-5 per cent each during the period.
