Sensex zooms 120pts, Bajaj gains 5%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 30 points at 11,222, and there was no looking back. The index hit a high of 11,330 points before closing the day with a gain of 120 points at 11,313.

All the sectoral indices finished with gains today. The BSE Midcap Index moved up over 2% to 4723. The BSE Oil & Gas Index gained nearly 2% to 5307.

The overall market was extremely bullish - out of 2,541 scrips traded, 1,840 moved up, 647 declined and 54 were unchanged.

Index Movers & Shakers

Bajaj advanced over 5% (Rs 133) to Rs 2,785. Tata Motors and Maruti also moved up, but Hero Honda was down Rs 15 at Rs 682.

A late bout of buying saw HDFC finish with a gain of 3.6% (Rs 45) at Rs 1,310.

Heavyweights finished on a strong note today. Reliance was firm right through the session, and ended with a gain of 1.8% (Rs 18) at Rs 1,029.

ONGC added Rs 20 to Rs 1,213. SBI was up 1.6% (Rs 14) at Rs 872. While HLL was up 2% (Rs 4) at Rs 227, ITC was up 1.7% (Rs 3) at Rs 179.

Satyam added Rs 17 to Rs 774. Infosys was up Rs 13 at Rs 1,755.

Cipla gained 3.6% (Rs 9) to Rs 250. Bharti was up 2% (Rs 9) at Rs 413. Tata Steel gained Rs 7 to Rs 531. ACC, Gujarat Ambuja and Grasim also finished with gains.

While BHEL was up Rs 25 at Rs 2,178, L&T slipped Rs 4 to Rs 2,306.

Oil PSUs on fire

Oil PSU scrips logged sharp gains today. BPCL advanced nearly 7% (Rs 21) to Rs 326. Kochi Refineries was up over 6% at Rs 130. HPCL was up over 5% at Rs 235. IOC added over 6% to Rs 424.

Value Chart

Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 117 crore followed by Mahindra Gesco (Rs 115 crore), Bombay Dyeing (Rs 110 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 54 crore), HPCL (Rs 49 crore).
