Sensex zooms 185pts, Infosys gains 4%

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 95 points at 12,999, which also turned out to be the low for the day.

Sustained buying across-the-board saw the index zoom to a high of 12,416. The Sensex finally closed with a solid gain of 185 points (1.52%) at 12,389.

All the sectoral indices finished with strong gains today. The BSE Bankex zoomed over 2% (140 points) to 6096. The BSE IT Index also gained over 2% (105 points) to 4404. The BSE Metal Index moved up 1.75% (148 points) to 8589. The BSE Auto and PSU indices gained 1.5% each to 5460 and 5830, respectively.

The sentiment was extremely bullish - out of 2,583 scrips traded, 1,834 advanced, 671 declined and 78 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

While 27 Sensex scrips advanced, three declined today.

HDFC Bank zoomed nearly 4% (Rs 35) to Rs 928.  SBI added over 2% (Rs 24) to Rs 1,039, and ICICI Bank was up 1.4% (Rs 10) at Rs 705.

Infosys advanced nearly 3.5% (Rs 62) to Rs 1,866. While Wipro moved up over 2% to Rs 520, TCS and Satyam gained over 1% each to Rs 999 and Rs 818, respectively.

Gujarat Ambuja moved up 3% (Rs 3) to Rs 120. Tata Steel gained 2.7% (Rs 14) to Rs 537. Reliance Communications, L&T, ONGC, Tata Motors and Bajaj finished on a strong note.

Bharti, Reliance Energy and Dr. Reddy's slipped marginally today.

VOLUME & VALUE TOPPERS

Gwalior Chemicals topped the volume chart with trades of over 78 lakh shares followed by Petronet (68 lakh), Essar Shipping (65 lakh), Silverline (59 lakh) and SAIL (46 lakh).

Mahindra Gesco topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 218 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 134 crore), Atlanta (Rs 96 crore), Gwalior Chemicals (Rs 76 crore) and Unitech (Rs 75 crore).
