Sesame seed exports from the country are estimated to surge over 300,000 tonnes in 2008-09 on account of lower production in Sudan and Ethiopia.

So far in 2007-08, the country has exported 250,000 tonnes out of the total output of 450,000 tonnes. China alone has imported 60,000 tonnes in 2007-08.

"Considering the demand in the global markets, sesame seed exports are set to cross 300,000 tonnes in 2008-09," said Sanjay Shah, Chairman of Indian Oilseeds & Produce Exporters' Association (IOPEA).

Lower output in Sudan and Ethiopia has propelled the demand for Indian sesame seeds in the global market. The production in both the countries has fallen by 25 per cent following damage to the crop.

However, India's export performance in 2008-09 will also depend on production in some other African countries and China. "New crop in these countries will start hitting global markets by September," said Kishor Tanna, former Chairman of IOPEA.

Apart from China, India exports sesame seed to West Asia and Latin American countries. Increased export demand has already started showing its impact on the prices of sesame seed. Recently, prices soared to a record level of Rs 2,000 per 20 kg. This is the highest ever price recorded by the commodity. At present, the price is hovering around Rs 1,700 per 20 kg.

Meanwhile, the area under sesame seed in the current season has increased three-fold.
