Smallcap stocks outperform; Alphageo, Astec Lifesciences zoom 20%

Shares of smallcap companies outperformed largecaps with the S&P BSE Smallcap index gaining nearly 1% as compared to the flat close of the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex on Wednesday.

The S&P Smallcap index ended 100 points higher at 11,381 levels against 11 points rise in the S&P BSE Sensex. The S&P BSE Midcap index closed 0.52% or 59 points higher at 11,476.

34 stocks from the smallcap index included Coromandel International, Dalmia Bharat, Finolex Cables, GIC Housing Finance, Lumax Industries, PVR and Tata Metaliks, all hitting their respective 52-week highs on the BSE in an intra-day trade.

Alphageo (India), Astec Lifesciences, Supreme Infrastructure India and SRS were locked in upper circuit of 20% while OK Play India, Diamond Power Infrastructure, Tata Metaliks, SRS Real Infrastructure and ABG Shipyard were locked at 5% upper circuit on the BSE.

Shares of companies engaged in defence related sector such as Walchandnagar Industries, Astra Microwave Products, Reliance Defence and Engineering and Nelco were up more than 5% each after an India-US joint statement during official visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US said that the leaders of the two countries decided to expand bilateral defense cooperation.

Gati, VRL Logistics, Snowman Logistics, Sical Logistics, Allcargo Logistics, Sical Logistics, Gateway Distriparks and Transport Corporation of India from logistics sector were up 3%-10% on hopes of clearance of the crucial Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill in the upper house of the Parliament.

Alphageo (India) has zoomed 62% in past three trading sessions from Rs 488 on June 3 to Rs 792 on Wednesday.  The company on Tuesday announced that it has received letters of award for contracts from Oil And Natural Gas Corporation of India (ONGC) for an estimated value of Rs 1,482 crore.
