The board said in a press statement that manufacturing units of curry powders and garam masalas should make sure the imported consignments of these spices are free from Chrysoidine, so as to avoid rejection and recall of exports.
The board issued the press release after a rapid alert notification by the European Union (EU). The notification issued by the European Commission (Health & Consumers, Directorate General) in Brussels observed that Chrysoidine is a genotoxic carcinogen, exposure to which in a person's diet would increase the risk of cancer. It also informed that there are no analytical methods available now to test this.
The EU notification, which stated they had received this information through their normal horizon scanning activities, maintained it was in relation to the consignment destined for the Indian market.
