Indian sugar exports rose 331 per cent despite the fall in global sugar prices to touch 14.56 lakh tonnes (valued at Rs 1,728 crore in 2001-02), up from 3.38 lakh tonnes (valued at Rs 430.97) in 2000-01.
However, to make the sugar industry competitive and viable, it was necessary to boost returns from co-products, union food minister Sharad Yadav said at a conference on the achievements of the ministry during the past three years.
