The Sensex opened marginally (13 points) higher at 13,951. Fresh buying in the opening trades saw the index hit the 14,000-mark for the second consecutive day. The index rallied to a new, all-time, intra-day high of 14,035. Profit-taking (as reported in our morning update) saw the index slip to a low of 13,848 - down 187 points from the day's high. Renewed buying in select heavyweights saw the index bounce into positive zone towards the close. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 11 points at 13,949. The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices were down nearly 1% each at 5777 and 6740, respectively. The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,643 stocks traded, 1,645 declined, 943 advanced and the rest were unchanged today. INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS Ranbaxy and BHEL gained 1.5% each at Rs 391 and Rs 2,621, respectively. Hindalco and Bharti Airtel moved up over 1% each to Rs 178 and Rs 647, respectively. ICICI Bank, Reliance Communications and ONGC were also up 1% each at Rs 871, Rs 463 and Rs 865, respectively. Reliance Energy dropped over 2% to Rs 540. Cipla and ACC shed 1.7% each to Rs 248 and Rs 1,145, respectively. ITC slipped 1.5% to Rs 188. NTPC, Gujarat Ambuja and Dr.Reddy's declined over 1% each to Rs 148, Rs 140 and Rs 757, respectively. VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS Parsvnath topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 195.70 crore followed by Atlanta (Rs 178 crore), Reliance (Rs 124.10 crore), Century Textiles (Rs 87 crore) and Donear Industries (Rs 82.80 crore). Bella Steel led the volume chart with trades of around 2.25 crore shares followed by Manali Petro (88.25 lakh), Shiva Cement (72.40 lakh), Nandan Exim (39.65 lakh) and Donear Industries (38.85 lakh). |
