India's tea exports during the year 2003-04 was down by 3.97 million kg to 180.43 million kg from 184.40 million kg in the previous financial year.

Tea production in the country, however, increased by 12.89 million kg to 850.49 mn kg from 837.60 mn kg.

The year had begun on a subdued note as major importers of Indian tea like Russia and UK had reduced their intake, industry sources said.

"There was a stage in the middle of the last fiscal when it was felt that we would not be able to come anywhere near the level reached in 2002-03," they said.

The tea exports had started improving in the second half of the last fiscal with an increased export to countries like Pakistan and Iraq.

The exports to Pakistan doubled to seven million kg during the year and with Pakistan Tea association signing an MoU to increase direct tea trade with its Indian counterpart last week, the figures are likely to improve further this year, they said.
