TERRIBLE THURSDAY - Sensex tumbles 826pts

The Metal Index cracked 11.4% to 9,200. The Consumer Durables index plunged over 8% to 3,268. The Auto, Bankex and Oil & Gas indices tumbled 7% each to 5,283, 5,243 and 5,558, respectively.

The Mid-cap and Small-cap indices dropped 6.4% each to 5,515 and 7,127, respectively.

All the other sectoral indices ended with losses in excess of 5% each.

The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,557 stocks traded, 2,241 declined, 288 advanced and 28 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

All Sensex stocks ended in negative zone with as many as five stocks ending with losses in excess of 10% each.

ACC slumped 12% to Rs 798. Gujarat Ambuja crumbled 9.5% to Rs 99, and Grasim crashed 8.5% to Rs 1,986.

Hindalco plunged 12% to Rs 192, and Tata Steel tumbled 11% to Rs 545.

Reliance Energy dropped over 10% to Rs 535. NTPC slipped 5.4% to Rs 124, and Tata Power declined 3% to Rs 548.

Maruti plunged 10% to Rs 819. Tata Motors tumbled over 9% to Rs 873, and Bajaj Auto slipped nearly 8% to Rs 3,012. Hero Honda was down 1.8% at Rs 874.

Reliance slumped 7.6% to Rs 1,005, and ONGC shed 6.5% to Rs 1,349.

BHEL crashed 9% to Rs 2,113. Larsen & Toubro dropped 6% to Rs 2,543.

SBI declined 8.3% to Rs 908. While ICICI Bank dropped 5.5% to Rs 592, HDFC Bank shed 3.5% to Rs 818. HDFC was down nearly 5% at Rs 1,289.

Satyam and Wipro slumped over 6% each to Rs 716 and Rs 510, respectively. Infosys dropped 5.4% to Rs 2,543 and TCS slipped 4.6% to Rs 1,922. Bharti Airtel was down 4.3% at Rs 400.

ITC and HLL shed over 6% each to Rs 191 and Rs 259, respectively.

Ranbaxy slipped 6% to Rs 460. Cipla and Dr.Reddy's tumbled 5.5% each to Rs 245 and Rs 1,554, respectively.

OTHER LOSERS & GAINERS

Mahindra Gesco hit the 20% lower limit at Rs 1,031. DCW, GTN Industries, Surya Pharma, Lokesh Machines, Usha Martin, Aksh Optifibre, Tantia Constructions, KRBL, Sterlite, India Cement, Century Textiles, Orchid Chemicals, Bombay Dyeing, VSNL, Gujarat Narmada, MTNL, Punj Lloyd and Sterlite Optical ended with hefty losses today.

Adani Exports gained 2.5% to Rs 189. Kovai Medi, Jai Corp, JBF Industries, Adani Exports, Nandam Exim, Cosmo Films, Indorama Textiles and Shriram City were the other notable gainers today.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 325.24 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 250.39 crore), Bombay Dyeing (Rs 137.18 crore), SBI (Rs 132.85 crore) and Infosys (Rs 118.50 crore).

G V Films led the volume chart with trades of around 1.58 crore shares followed by IFCI (1.04 crore), Reliance Petro (78.11 lakh), SAIL (65.50 lakh) and Hindalco (58.62 lakh).
